a shared artists space that doesn’t get much better than this.
About Us
Our History
Tonal (tuh-nawl), they/she, is a Black queer multi-disciplinary artist, residing in Chicago, IL. Raised in Kalamazoo, MI, she dreamt of lakes she could only see on maps and flowers so powerful they protected Black folx. Now you will see these themes pop out in her paintings, writings, and photography.
Her background in language and education has taken her to live abroad in Ecuador, Argentina, and Brazil. Their travels and the depth of the diaspora inform her resistance and work. Educator turned artist, Tonal revels in expanding and learning.
Meanwhile, their art attempts to depict the vast uniqueness of Black personhood in their element.
Now they are seeking to open the first co-working studio for BIPOC artists in Chicago, The Studio Gallery!
